The Iran-backed Yemen rebels have attacked vessels in the Red Sea at least 100 times since October 7, 2023.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the State Department is redesignating the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in accordance with President Donald Trump’s executive order, signed in January.
President Trump stated in his order, “The Houthis’ activities threaten the security of American civilians and personnel in the Middle East, the safety of our closest regional partners, and the stability of global maritime trade.”
The U.S. military has provided defense from the Houthis against vessels in the Red Sea, escorting commercial ships to prevent attacks. The terrorist group has conducted at least one hundred attacks in the Red Sea since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
The secretary said the redesignation “demonstrates the Trump Administration’s commitment to protecting our national security interests, the safety of the American people, and the security of the United States.”
He added, “Terrorist designations play a critical role in our fight against terrorism and are an effective way to curtail support for terrorist activities.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary of State Rubio to be led by the Lord as he heads the State Department.
- For U.S. diplomatic officials as they seek to implement President Trump’s foreign policies.
